The Cambridge-Khmer F2L Curriculum
Designing a Curriculum for Primary-Aged Khmer Children: An Overview
As educators, it is our goal to provide students with a well-rounded and comprehensive education that prepares them for success in both their academic and personal endeavours. This is especially important for young learners, as the primary years are a crucial time for building a strong foundation for learning.
With this in mind, we have designed a curriculum for primary-aged Khmer children based on the UK Cambridge Primary curriculum. This internationally recognised curriculum is widely respected for its rigorous academic standards and focus on developing essential skills and knowledge in a range of subjects.
Core Subjects
The curriculum covers a range of subjects, including English, mathematics, science, and global citizenship. These subjects are designed to provide students with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in their future academic pursuits and to become responsible, global citizens.
In a combination of English and Khmer, students will learn to read, write, and speak effectively, with an emphasis on developing strong literacy skills. They will also study literature, including traditional tales and contemporary works, to build their understanding of language and culture. We have also included Khmer language and Literature, to be delivered by local teachers.
In addition to the core subjects, English as a Second Language will be prioritised throughout students’ time at F2L. As many of these students may be learning English as an additional language, it is important to provide them with the support and resources they need to succeed.
The F2L ESL program is designed to help students improve their language skills and develop confidence in using English. This may include activities such as pronunciation practice, vocabulary building, and conversation practice. The program is tailored to the individual needs of each student and may involve both group and individual instruction.
By providing support for ESL, we aim to ensure that all students have the opportunity to succeed academically and communicate effectively in English. This is especially important as English is the language of instruction for the rest of the curriculum and is widely spoken internationally (although Khmer translation is offered throughout all core subjects).
Mathematics is key subject in the Cambridge Primary curriculum. Students will learn basic mathematical concepts, including numbers, shape, and space, as well as more advanced topics such as algebra and geometry. These skills will help students understand and analyse real-world problems and make informed decisions.
Science is also highly placed in the curriculum, with a focus on developing students’ curiosity and critical thinking skills. Students will learn about the natural world, including topics such as the human body, plants, and the environment. They will also be introduced to basic scientific principles and techniques, such as experimentation and data analysis.
Global citizenship is also a pivotal part of the Cambridge Primary curriculum. Students will learn about different cultures and global issues, and will be encouraged to think critically about their place in the world and their responsibilities as global citizens. This will help them develop the skills and knowledge they need to become active and engaged members of their communities.
Physical Education, or PE, is essential to help students develop physical fitness, coordination, and teamwork skills. Through a variety of activities such as sports, games, and fitness exercises, students will learn the importance of leading a healthy and active lifestyle.
Media is a subject that is becoming increasingly important in today’s digital age. In the Media program, students will learn about different types of media and how they are used to communicate information and ideas. They will also have the opportunity to create their own media projects, using a range of digital tools and techniques.
Art provides students with a creative outlet and helps them develop their artistic skills and self-expression. Students will have the opportunity to explore a range of artistic media, including drawing, painting, sculpture, and more.
History is a subject that helps students understand the past and how it has shaped the world we live in today. Through the study of history, students will learn about important events and people from the past, as well as the cultural, social, and political developments that have shaped our world. This is especially important given Cambodia sensitive more recent history.
In the history program, students will have the opportunity to learn about a range of historical periods and civilisations, including ancient civilisations, the Middle Ages, and modern history. They will also develop important skills such as critical thinking, analysis, and research.
In conclusion, the Cambridge-Khmer F2L Primary curriculum is a rigorous and well-respected program that provides students with a strong foundation for learning. By covering a range of subjects, including English, mathematics, science, and global citizenship, it helps students develop the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in their academic and personal endeavours.
